Walsenburg, CO
Our Walsenburg facility is a commercial scale Aquaponics farm designed for high-efficiency baby leaf production and Rainbow Trout culture (50,000 gal culture). Located in southern Colorado, Walsenburg the location offers a unique blend of rural charm and abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. The facility will operate under supplemental lighting during the winter months, with optimized controlled-environment features for year-round production. Out of state staff will be accommodated in the dorm facility on site.
Responsibilities:
Fish Husbandry
- · Perform daily fish feeding, behavior observation, and health monitoring.
- · Identify and report signs of disease, stress, or abnormal behavior.
- · Grade and transfer fish as needed for biomass management.
- · Perform sampling and report biometrics.
- · Perform and execute any treatment procedures under supervision.
Water Quality & System Monitoring
- · Collect and analyze water samples (e.g., DO, pH, temperature, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates).
- · Maintain detailed logs of water quality data and fish health metrics.
- · Respond to alarms and system alerts with appropriate corrective actions.
- · Support the calibration and maintenance of probes, sensors, and meters.
System Maintenance & Operations
- · Assist with the cleaning and routine maintenance of RAS components, including tanks, biofilters, and oxygenation equipment.
- · Monitor mechanical equipment such as pumps, blowers, valves, and alarms for proper function.
- · Support the integration of aquaculture with hydroponic systems, ensuring balance and nutrient flow.
Harvest & Processing
- · Assist in the humane and efficient harvest of fish.
- · Support post-harvest processes such as cleaning, packing, and cold storage.
- · Maintain hygiene and food safety protocols during handling.
Other Duties
- · Participate in weekend and holiday rotations as assigned.
- · Maintain a clean, organized, and biosecure work environment.
- · Collaborate with greenhouse, QA, and engineering teams for cross-functional integration.
Qualifications:
Required:
- · Degree or certification in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, Fisheries, or a related field – OR equivalent hands-on experience.
- · Familiarity with fish biology, water chemistry, and RAS operations.
- · Ability to lift 40 lbs, work on your feet, and handle wet, humid environments.
- · Reliable, safety-conscious, and attentive to detail.
Preferred:
- · Prior experience/knowledge specific to trout and/or tilapia in an RAS or aquaponics system.
- · Basic plumbing or mechanical aptitude.
- · Experience with fish health diagnostics or treatment protocols.
Additional Information:
- · Must have reliable transportation to assigned facility.
- · Occasional travel between Walsenburg, CO and Jonesboro, GA may be required (travel expenses covered).
- · Flexible working hours including some weekends and holidays.
